Introduction

There are a number of reasons having a strong bio-diesel market and hence for developing a bio-diesel business, not least the environmental and socio-developmental reasons, but the bio-diesel business stands on its own from an economic perspective. The bio-diesel becomes an attractive proposition when oil prices are higher than the cost of vegetable oils as they can be used to directly replace petroleum derived products. This has been the case for some time when comparing non-edible vegetable oils with the petroleum derived products, such as Jatropha oil. As oil prices continue to rise and mandates and incentives from governments become more common, so the value of bio-diesel will rise.

On the other hand the gases emitted by petrol and diesel driven vehicles have an adverse effect on the environment and human health. There is universal acceptance of the need for reducing such emissions. As a responsible member of the global community, and also in our own interest, India must play an active role in exploring and adopting ways to reduce emission without affecting the process of growth and development. It can be achieved through the use of ethanol and bio diesel and blending them with motor spirit and diesel respectively. Bio-fuels like ethanol and bio-diesel being environment friendly, will help us to reduce the import cost for transport oil and greenhouse gas emission.
